The UK Government has been urged to clamp down on health tourism after it emerged that a 43-year old Nigerian woman named only as Priscilla gave birth to quadruplets and racked up a bill of £500,000. She gave both to her children in November shortly after landing at Heathrow airport. She was travelling to America to actually give birth but was turned away by airline officials and decided to visit the United kingdom instead.
Luton and Dunstable University Hospital is said to be chasing payment from another Nigerian woman who owes the National Health Services £350,000 after flying to Britain to give birth to twins in 2015.
Katherine Murphy, chief executive of the Patients Association, said: "The NHS is in a critical state due to lack of resources, so any abuse from health tourism should be stopped."
