The 36-year-old singer is said to be "heartbroken and devastated" about the breakdown of their relationship.It's been reported that her decision was due to the 30-year-old Formula One star refusing to marry her.
“They’d been fighting for months but things had got much worse,” a source said.
"She finally had enough. Nicole knew Lewis had no plans to marry her, she's completely gutted and feels lost about her future.
“They spend so much time apart that things just became untenable.”
The former X Factor judge, who is currently performing in London in Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Cats, is usually based in Los Angeles.
It has been reported that the couple were struggling to maintain a long-distance relationship as Hamilton is based in Monaco.
Scherzinger has been supported by her family, with her mother Rosemary and elderly grandmother flying to London from Hawaii to be with her.
She has previously spoken about how she would not wish a long distance relationship on "anyone".
Both their agents are yet to comment.
In 2010 the pair split up to concentrate on their careers after struggling to maintain their long distance relationship.
But after a two month break they got back together.
At the time Hamilton said there was "no truth" in rumours of marriage, adding: ''Things are good. She's supporting me with my racing so we're focusing on our careers and we're doing our best to stay in touch and keep strong.''
They split again in 2011 and in 2013.
