Playing football is possibly the highest paid profession in the country and we always hear about the astronomical wages young players earn.
It's no surprise so many stay in the game for as long as they can, sometimes moving from club to club for big pay day. You might think once they hang up their boots, their income takes a massive hit, however, that's not the case for one of England's former stars.
According to US magazine Forbes, David Beckham made more than £50 million last year, putting him second in their list of retired athlete high earners (Michael Jordan is first). It's more than he managed to make when he was on the pitch on a regular basis and it's thanks in part to his associations with brands like H&M, Adidas, Sky Sports and he even helped launch a new line of whiskey.
"The deals also have significant potential thanks to Beckham’s ownership stake in the ventures. Beckham remains one of the top product pitchmen in sports, with a dozen deals to his name, including four in China. Beckham partnered with Swedish retailer H&M in 2012 for a line of bodywear. The venture expanded with swimwear in 2014. A new line of menswear this year will expand product offerings, as well as Beckham’s take. Doing business with Brand Beckham tends to be good business for everyone involved"
Beckham doesn't have a good reputation of being particularly clever but the briefest look at his finances suggests he's a lot smarter than people give him credit for. He's managed to turn himself into one of the biggest brands of any former footballer, so it's no surprise when he played the final game of his career with Paris Saint Germain, he donated his £170,000 a week wage to a children's charity.
