"No more Police Roadblocks & Injustices" New Inspector General of Police Solomon Arase.

The newly-confirmed inspector-general of the Nigeria police (IGP), Solomon Arase says he has ordered a 16-team task force to take down police road blocks across the country.

Police checkpoints also known as roadblocks which were intended to promote a sense of security and safety on Nigerian roads have over the years become synonymous with daylight robbery by the police who harass and extort money indiscriminately from road users.

Arase also said that henceforth no Nigerian would suffer injustice by his inaction or action throughout his tenure in office, and gave the assurance that the welfare of police officers will be one of his priorities .

It is common knowledge that police officers blame their corrupt and unruly behaviour on neglect and poor welfare by their superiors.

Arase who was addressing State House correspondents on Tuesday shortly after his confirmation by the police council as substantive IGP said:

“Their welfare will be number one on ‎my cardinal responsibilities. You don’t motivate a workforce except their welfare is paramount. I’m going to ensure that their welfare is going to be put on the front burner. To Nigerians, I know that their expectations are high but I can assure them that no Nigerian will suffer any injustice by my inaction or action.”

The problem with all of the IGP’s nice words is that we’ve heard it all before. A recent case in point is that of Arase’s predecessor Suleiman Abba, who immediately after his appointment in acting capacity in August 2014, announced with similar zeal his determination to eliminate police roadblocks; however, the few that were removed were back a few months after Abba’s announcement and it was back to business as usual.
