"Sunday Oliseh can guide the Super Eagles to the Gabon 2017 Africa Cup of Nations title" - Eddy Dombraye.

Sunday Oliseh can guide the Super Eagles to the Gabon 2017 Africa Cup of Nations title, according to former Nigeria forward Eddy Dombraye.

The Eagles won the Africa Cup of Nations on home soil in 1980 and waited for 14 to lift the trophy for the second time in Tunisia. After several failed attempts, Stephen Keshi, who was captain when Nigeria beat Zambia 2-1 in the final at Stade El Menzah, Tunis on April 10, 1994, returned 19 years later to guide the team to crown in South Africa.

Nigeria could not defend their title at Equatorial Guinea 2015 after poor run in the qualifiers ended in their surprise 2-2 draw against South Africa in Uyo – to pave the way for Congo to qualify for the championship along with Bafana Bafana.
Dombraye, who admits he was disappointed at Nigeria’s failure to reach Equatorial Guinea 2015, believes the team will qualify for Gabon 2017 – and Russia 2018 World Cup.

“Oliseh is doing a good job and I’m impressed by the Super Eagles’ performances since he took over the team,” the former Iwuanyanwu Nationale striker, who represented Nigeria at the 1999 FIFA Under-20 World Cup, told our correspondent on the telephone from his base in Ukraine.

“I believe the Eagles will improve under   Oliseh and win the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations if he receives support.”

The 36-year-old former Volyn Lutsk player, who expressed his delight at Watford striker Odion Ighalo’s performance in the Premier League as well as CSKA Moscow winger Ahmed Musa’s fine run in Russia, said the players could help Oliseh win Gabon 2017.

“They can lead us to the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon and win the title,” he said.

Dombraye also heaped praise on Russia-based midfielder Sylvester Igbonu and on-loan West Ham attacker Victor Moses for their current form.

The former Poland-based player commended the Nigeria Football Federation and the League Management Company for the improvements in the domestic league.

He said, “Football in Nigeria has improved and teams are now winning away from home. I monitor the league from here (Ukraine) and I’m happy with the developments.

“Officiating in the league is OK but the referees can do better.”
