The pair, who have been together for ten years, are now locked in a bitter custody battle over their eight-year-old son, David.
A spokesperson for soul singer Hudson, 36, told People magazine that she and Otunga “have been in the process of ending their relationship for a number of months”.
Otunga’s lawyer, Tracy Rizzo, said Hudson requested the order of protection because she fears losing access to her son as Otunga is the child’s primary caregiver.
The statement said Otunga would be granted custody as he looks after the boy while “Ms Hudson pursues her career all over the world”.
Otunga’s
lawyer accused soul diva Hudson of filing a restraining order “in an
effort to gain an unfair advantage in the custody dispute”.
Hudson has had her fair share of tragedy and heartache since rising to fame as an unknown performer on American Idol.
About a month after becoming engaged to Otunga in 2008, Hudson’s mother, Darnell Donerson,
and her brother, Jason Hudson, were found fatally shot in a Chicago
home. Her 7-year-old nephew, Julian King, was found dead in the backseat
of a car. Hudson’s former brother-in-law William Balfour was convicted
of the murders in 2012.
