FOX8 news is reporting that legendary Author, poet and civil rights activist Maya Angelou has died, aged 86.
Mayor Allen Joines confirmed Angelou was found by her caretaker this Wednesday morning. She recently cancelled a scheduled appearance of a special event to be held in her Honor where she was set to be honoured with the “Beacon of Life Award” at the 2014 MLB Beacon Award Luncheon on May 30 in Houston to focus on her health.
Angelou was a celebrated poet, novelist, educator, producer, actress, filmmaker and civil rights activist. She received more than 50 honorary degrees. In 2011 she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award of the United States by President Obama.
