Lawrence John Ripple reportedly entered a bank in Kansas City, Kansas, on Wednesday, September 7, and handed a teller a note saying he had a gun and wanted the cash.
But after the bank employee obliged and handed over a bag full of cash, Ripple wandered over to the bank lobby and took a seat, apparently waiting for police to arrive. Once officers appeared, the suspect told them, “I’m the guy you’re looking for.”
During questioning, Ripple allegedly told officers that he wanted to go to jail to escape living with his wife. According to The Kansas City Star, the man told police he “no longer wanted to be in that situation.” An FBI report on the incident noted, “Ripple wrote out his demand note in front of his wife … and told her he’d rather be in jail than at home.”
